The Statement

Home: Welcome
emotion
and the majority of my pieces are inspired by some event, person or experience that has overwhelmed me emotionally. . In this preliminary heightened state of emotion my application of the medium to the canvas is strong, deliberate, and purposeful. The markings, although haphazard, have an intention that is raw and emotional.

I believe

I believe imperfection is honesty. My main focus when creating my work is creating without the fear of making a mistake limiting my creativity. The Ulitimate goal being to completely abandon the need to be perfect and fully experience the raw emotion and its influences . Easier said than done? Maybe... maybe not.

At the risk of some eye rolls, I believe ART is alive and has the ability to communicate how it wants to be brought to life. I think an ARTist's adeptness at deciphering and implementing this message is what separates "good" ARTists from "great" ARTists. And when an ARTist ignores these "clues" all together the ultimate result is what can be considered "bad" ART.

The art truly informs me of the process of its creation, I find a road map within what is already there. Deepening shadows and highlighting highlights until I feel its finished. So If I believe the path is already laid out for me. If I am only following a road map to a destination, I can eradicate the fear of making a mistake. My initial markings are haphazard, emotional. But the rest of my work on my pieces is meticulous and thoughtful because I am carefully watching for the clues on how to proceed.

Several of My favorite pieces have been born out of the desire to create without waste. The last little bit of paint on a pallet or the scraps from a damaged canvas have become powerful subjects in my work. I often find my pieces explore duality: Light and dark, hot and cold, before and after and many times good and evil. I can become so engrossed in this idea that I realize I am actually rooting for a particular color or a technique in the painting to "win" as I paint. This is most apparent in pieces inspired by LGBTQIA subject matter. I believe that could be related to my 15 yrs of Catholic Schooling but I'll save that for my Auto Biography: "Memoirs of a Gay Sean"

I believe Art can be anything you have passion for and put hard work into.
I believe the experience of consuming art, in this abstract form, is specific to the individual viewer. Once I've processed my emotions finished the work, and completed my journey with the piece I release the work and the experience. Many times after futhur observation I discover new themes I didn't conscientiously include.

I believe ART grows, chanages, and evolves even after its completion. A piece from 50 years ago, interpreted now, can evoke very different themes and emotions than it did in the past. This becomes even more apparent with the way acccess to ART (and ART itself) are changing. So much ART from the past easily viewed on our phones which opens it up to new Points of View and interpretations.

I believe there is not enough inclusive and equal representation for
who/what are widely referred to as the "famous" ARTists/ART.

I believe all ART is valid and anyone brave enough to put their ART out into the
world is a true ARTist.
